Chapter of Lost Runes
From the dusty shelves of the Dwarven Abbey, I, Torvin Stonehand, unearthed a fragment of vellum, barely clinging to existence. It detailed the search for the Runes of Lumina, but not in the same way as the Chapter of Luminescence. This text, barely legible, spoke of a catastrophic experiment within the Glimmering Caverns, where dwarven rune-smiths sought to enhance their power using the ambient Auric Resonance.
The experiment, overseen by a dwarf named Faelar Stonebright, spiraled out of control. The runes, meant to amplify light, instead created an Umbral Vein, a source of pure darkness that threatened to consume the caverns. The vellum described a desperate attempt to seal the fissure, a feat that required the sacrifice of one of the rune-smiths. Faelar, driven by remorse, volunteered, etching the Runes of Return into his own flesh as a final act of redemption. He was sealed in the fissure, hopefully preventing it from consuming the light of the caverns forever.
Did Faelar succeed? The vellum abruptly ends. Perhaps the Silent Monks of Durin's Peak know more about what happened, since I see that their order played some part in the sealing. There's also reference to a Lost Pilgrim, who also sought to close the divide. Was this experiment tied to the Lost City of Umbral? The scribbled handwriting suggests a connection to the Truthseekers. Was it they who commissioned the experiment? The Crimson Cartographers should map the location, but the area sounds dangerous. Can the Sunstone of Aethelgard be used to purify the location? Perhaps a member of the Cobalt Corsairs found the location, and tried to loot it, only to realize the darkness was too powerful. A copy of this must be placed in the Vault of Whispers. What part did the Forgotten Smith play? Perhaps it involved The Gaze of the Deep.
