The Crimson Cartographers
The Crimson Cartographers are an elite society of dwarven explorers and mystics, dedicated to charting the hidden and forgotten pathways of the world. Unlike traditional cartographers who rely on mundane tools and techniques, the Crimson Cartographers use a combination of arcane rituals, geomancy, and dreamwalking to map the subtle energies that flow beneath the surface of the earth. Their origins are shrouded in mystery, some say they were founded in the aftermath of The Schism of Stone and Sky, by dwarves who sought to escape the endless political squabbles of the surface world. Others claim they are descendants of the Truthseekers, gifted with the ability to perceive realities beyond the veil. Regardless of their origins, the Crimson Cartographers are masters of their craft, possessing an unparalleled knowledge of the Iron-Grip Mountains and beyond.
The maps created by the Crimson Cartographers are not mere representations of physical space, but rather living documents that resonate with the energies of the land. They are said to be capable of guiding travelers through treacherous terrain, revealing hidden passages, and protecting them from danger. The Silent Monks of Durin's Peak often consult these maps during their meditations, seeking guidance on their spiritual journeys. The maps can lead to places such as The Silent Forges, but also to new locations like the Whispering Cairns and The Obsidian Labyrinth. The Cartographers are said to have a hidden archive somewhere within the Iron-Grip Mountains, containing maps of every corner of the known world, and perhaps beyond. Access to this archive is fiercely guarded, and only those who possess the Runescribed Key and earn the Cartographers' trust are permitted entry. Archivist Theron has long sought to infiltrate the Cartographers' ranks, hoping to gain access to their forbidden knowledge, but his attempts have been repeatedly thwarted. The Order of the Azure Hand views the Cartographers with suspicion, believing their practices to be heretical and dangerous. The Shadow-Goblins fear the Cartographers, knowing that their maps can reveal their hidden tunnels and traps. Perhaps the Cobalt Corsairs would be less reliant on their airships if they allied with the Crimson Cartographers. Some rumors even suggest that the Crimson Cartographers know a way to control the Chitinous Swarm, but prefer to keep this knowledge secret, fearing the consequences of unleashing such a power. They may be the only ones who know the location of the Lost City of Umbral. They know more about Auric Resonance than even the Gnomish Tinkers. Is it possible they communicate with the Forgotten Smith?
