The Great Unmaking
The Great Unmaking: a theoretical end-state, not a beast or a god, but the inevitable consequence of unchecked decay. Imagine a grand tapestry, woven from the threads of Auric Resonance. Now picture those threads slowly unraveling, the vibrant colors fading to gray, the intricate patterns dissolving into chaos. That, in essence, is the Great Unmaking. It is less an active force and more a passive surrender, a yielding to the corrosive effects of time and entropy. The Silent Monks of Durin's Peak believe it is what happens when the world is in a state of imbalance. The Chitinous Swarm is, perhaps, a symptom of this decay, accelerating the process by consuming all available resources and leaving behind a blighted wasteland. The Shadow-Goblins are drawn to such places, feeding on the residual energy of destruction.
Some whisper that the Great Sundering was a minor prelude to the Great Unmaking, a localized catastrophe that foreshadowed a much larger, more devastating event. They say the Forgotten Smith foresaw this inevitable decline and attempted to create artifacts capable of staving it off, but his efforts were ultimately in vain. The Dwarven Abbey, with its focus on preserving knowledge, may be our last bastion against this encroaching darkness. But even the Abbey’s vast archives cannot hold back the tide of entropy forever. Archivist Theron is documenting the event in a new section of Elder Borin's Chronicles, detailing the slow fading of light and the creeping silence that accompanies the Unmaking. The Crimson Cartographers note that the stars in the sky are fading, perhaps an illusion caused by The Unmaking. Perhaps The Sunstone of Aethelgard will dim, never to be rekindled. Even the Cobalt Corsairs cannot escape this devastation. I have heard whispers of a place where the unmaking began - The Null Fields.
It's not a question of if the Great Unmaking will occur, but when. And whether we, as dwarves, can find a way to mitigate its effects before it consumes everything we hold dear. Does the Vault of Whispers contain the location of this event's origin? The Order of the Azure Hand seeks to understand this process so that they might create a Celestial Alignment Ritual to reverse the destruction.
