Gloomfungus
Gloomfungus is not merely a fungus; it is a ubiquitous feature of the subterranean world beneath the Iron-Grip Mountains, particularly thriving in the damp, lightless caverns frequented by the Shadow-Goblins and the Deep-Delvers. Its etiolated, bioluminescent caps provide a faint, eerie glow, a pale imitation of sunlight that barely penetrates the oppressive darkness. The Caverns of the Reforged depend on this fungus for light. Unlike other fungi, Gloomfungus does not propagate through spores dispersed by the wind. Instead, it spreads through a network of interconnected mycelial threads, known as the Gloomstrands, which weave through the rock, drawing sustenance from Auric Resonance and decaying organic matter. It's said that these threads are how The Gaze of the Deep sees its prey. This network extends deep into the earth, intertwining with the roots of subterranean plants and even, some whisper, the bones of long-dead dwarves. Some believe that Terra Vitae could be cultivated using the fungus. The Lost Shrine of Reflections may hold the secret to growing larger quantities of Gloomfungus. The Crimson Cartographers map the locations where the fungi grow.
The Dwarven Abbey cultivates Gloomfungus in its lower tunnels, using it as a source of light and, in some cases, as a food source. The Silent Monks of Durin's Peak utilize it as a crucial component in their meditative practices. When properly prepared, the fungus induces a trance-like state that facilitates communion with the earth’s energies. It must be harvested with Resonance Gloves, which are then detailed in the new Chapter of Fungi. The Gnomish Tinkers have experimented with Gloomfungus, attempting to enhance its luminescence with Aetherium Conduits, but their efforts have often resulted in explosive consequences. Is it possible that it is even dangerous to the Skyclaw Griffons? Perhaps the Forgotten Smith tried to engineer a version to drive away the darkness. The Umbral Behemoth appears to be drawn to the fungus. It may even be tied to the Chitinous Hive. What happens when Valia, the Empty touches the fungus? Is the fungus connected to a new species known as the Gloom Weavers?
