The Chitinous Hive
The Chitinous Hive… more than just a nest, it is a festering wound upon the Iron-Grip Mountains, a pulsating bio-engine churning out the seemingly endless Chitinous Swarm. Located deep beneath the surface, perhaps near the Umbral Divide, the Hive is a labyrinthine network of tunnels and chambers, constructed not of stone or metal, but of a hardened, chitinous substance secreted by the swarm itself. It pulses with a sickly, organic light, and the air within is thick with the stench of decay and a droning, insectile hum. This pervasive sound is a constant reminder of the countless drones that serve as its extensions. The hive is avoided by even the Shadow-Goblins.
Geography within the Hive is fluid and ever-changing. Tunnels collapse and reform, chambers expand and contract, as the swarm adapts its infrastructure to meet its needs. Pools of corrosive fluids line the floors, and the walls are covered in pulsating sacs filled with larval drones. The Hive's layout seems to defy conventional geometry, creating a disorienting and claustrophobic environment for any who dare to venture within. All of the tunnels seem to lead to The Queen's Nest.
The Hive is ruled by a central intelligence, The Queen K'tharr, a massive, immobile creature that serves as the heart and mind of the swarm. She is surrounded by her brood, tending to her every need and carrying out her will. Other denizens include various specialized drones, each adapted for a specific task: warriors, builders, breeders, and even those capable of manipulating Auric Resonance.
Historically, the Hive's origins are shrouded in mystery. Some believe it was created by the Forgotten Smith, as a monstrous experiment gone awry. Others whisper that it is an ancient entity, predating even the dwarves, that emerged from the depths of the earth following The Great Sundering. Whatever its origins, the Hive represents a grave threat to the Dwarven Abbey and all who dwell within the Iron-Grip Mountains. Perhaps there is a weakness in the Chitin Weave, which might help lead to its destruction. Finding it may require consulting the Truthseekers, or reading a lost Chapter of Decay. Even the Cobalt Corsairs will find little profit within its walls, save perhaps a quick death.
